I used this for 16 months, and the needle (cantilever and tip) broke off. It sounded good up until it broke. I emailed Audio Technica to see if I can send it to be remounted, but they haven't responded yet after 1 week.I'm back to using my Shure M78s until I can get this one replaced.If I had to do it all over, I would only use this for recording 78s, not for general play.[update: The stylus and cantilever are not repairable, according to an email sent to me 9/18/2020]

I debated for some time about spending this much for a cartridge but after reading reviews I decided it would be my choice. Since it's arrival I have thrown the worst records in my collection at it. The 1896 Berliner by George Graham was inaudible until I played it on this. I have thrown scruffy UK Nicole label records, Harvard records, not so clean Batwings, Grand Prizes, Monarchs, dime store brands, and pristine Decca electrics at it and it shines every time. Questa è la puntina che suona meglio per i 78 giri. Confrontata con OM78 e 2M78 ben più note e non c'è proprio paragone in favore della Audio Technica. Suona bene anche quei 78 giri che con le altre puntine quasi si distingue a stento la musica dal fruscio di fondo. E' una puntina conica e non ellittica come giusto che sia per i dischi che vanno dagli anni 20 ai metà 50. Attenzione però che è una puntina MC e quindi va amplificata opportunamente. In spite of the limited bandwidth you get from the old shellacs and the fact that the recording curve for phonograph records was not standardized until 1958 (RIAA) (which means you don't always get the optimal sound as originally recorded unless you use some very specific and high end equipment), I find that rediscovering the old shellacs in my possession is turning out to be great fun!The dynamics and definition you get with this cartridge are quite amazing which to me makes it's

I read the reviews for this item and most say it's a great choice of cartridge for playing 78rpm records. Having heard it, I agree. It reporoduces the sound very well. The instructions are in Japanese, but it's not too hard to get the cartridge installed; I did however need some help so I posted a question on Amazon and a previous purchaser responded which was very helpful and that resolved the issue.

いままでシュアーＭ４４Gに、SP用の針を差し替えて使用していましたが、at -mono3/spに換えて感激しました。素人が一聴して明らかな違いを体感できました。評論家みたいな言い回しはできませんが、音色が澄んでいて輝きがを感じそしてとてものびがある音です。その他、針のノイズも軽減されたなどですかね。手持ちの盤を何度も聴きたくなります。残念ながら良いSP盤はとんでもなく値が高くて入手し難いですね。

I received this cartridge as a gift in 2016 and have been using it primarily to digitize 78 RPM shellac records from the 1920s to 1950s. It works amazingly well.The manufacturer rates the frequency response at 20 to 15000 Hz in the instruction manual and on their website, but a PDF datasheet on their website says only 45 to 7000 Hz (the typical range for a 78). Maybe it changed? Well, I confirmed with a hi-fi test LP that this cartridge easily reproduces a sine sweep up 27 kHz without any

UPDATE! This has stopped working! Makes loud popping sounds and cuts out. The regular AT cart will play my 78s but not this pricey Mono3/SP. It is no longer eligible for return. Any advice? Where from here?I use this cart on my Audio-Technica AT-LP 120 USB turntable and my newly-cleaned 78s sound wonderful.

I compared this cartridge to the Shure M78S Wide Groove Monophonic Cartridge. I copied some shellac 78s into files. I found that this Audio-Technica cartridge produced noticeably less high frequency noise than the Shure cartridge. Any cartridge (such as the Shure) designed for vinyl records, even one with a mono needle configuration, will have more hi-fi response than is needed for a 78. As a result it will play back the surface noise of the shellac surface, which is not as smooth as vinyl.

I am very impressed with this cart. It shipped from Japan and took a couple of weeks to arrive, but it got here three weeks earlier than scheduled.I have 4 other 78 carts, a Grado, a Stanton, another Audio Technica and a Shure. They are stereo carts, though. I got interested in the LP version of this cart (which I have purchased since buying this one), and research led me to this 78 version.Mounting it to the headshell was standard and easy for anyone who has done this before. That this cartridge even exists seems a miracle. I keep hearing rumors that everyone is switching over to LPs and 45s, and that the big companies may actually stop pressing 78s altogether. I hope that's not true, because this cartridge sounds glorious and tracks like a dream. It has sonic qualities similar to the GE RPX... for which some collectors seem happy to pay upwards of $100 online even if they're nearly 70 years old and have been baking in grampa's attic since 1953. It brings old records back to life. It eliminates background noise and brings up the tone and clarity they originally had. This is not a normal mono cartridge. This is THE mono cartridge for 78s. If you're looking at reviews before buying this cartridge, now buy it.

If you want to play shelac 78rpm records, BUY THIS!!!! Its moving coil design removes more surface noise than more usual moving iron type phono cartdidge. I find it plays mono vinyl 33rpm as well, though the tip radius is too large, however it does better on mono LPs than my stereo Shure V15/II. Its purpose is for 78s, at which it gives better sound quality than anyone could possibly expect from 100 year old discs. (In fact, Audio Technica make a mono cartridge for vinyl LPs, Audio-Technica
